Artist's Comments

This is half of a drawing of my two sons that I'm working on. But Mason's too much of a badass to not post this now. I'm working on a wrestling/mma/boxing sort of poster where they're facing off. Might as well. All these dudes do is kick the shit out of each other, so I figured I'd capture it creatively.

It's Mason "The Bruiser" vs. Caleb "The Professional". A battle of epic proportions.

I love your choice of color. They go very well with the photo. And the expression is great.

I do have a question.. I dont know much about illustration, but these styled paintings... Do you trace over a photo and make the layers of color? Or do this all by eye? Cuz I notice that all of these flat color illustrations are all very proportionally accurate. Very realistic and all.

What I generally do is 'ink' over the photo to get the basic outline of the subject (all the blackest parts of the illustration), then I pull the photo to the side and use as reference and do all the color work by eye. This way I make sure most of the proportions are right, and it isn't a strict verbatim reproduction, you know?
